Greetings
Hi there. It's a small community yet, but I thought I'd post, say hello, share some stuff, and see if I can start a discussion. :)

So hello!

Here's my stuff: http://www.sparkcostumes.com/photos/thumbnails.php?album=8

I also have a furaffinity account, though all my pokemon get put into scraps after I post them: http://www.furaffinity.net/user/bladespark/

I put them into scraps because I don't (usually) take commissions for pokemon plush. So having them tucked away saves a bit of trouble, as I don't constantly get people asking to commission pokemon plushes. But lately I've opened up a few slots for them, and I've been considering the pros and cons of taking pokemon plush commissions.

I enjoy making them, and they pay well. I'd get a lot of business, I know. That's the pros side.

The cons side... well, it boils down to the fact that technically it's illegal. The licensing rights to make pokemon plush belong to companies like Jakks and Banpresto, not to me. I'm stealing designs I don't actually own. Obviously, of course, there's a huge difference between an artist coming up with original patterns based off of copyrighted characters, and selling them one at a time, and a bootlegger stealing them pattern and all and churning out thousands of crappy knock-offs. Nobody's going to sue me for making pokemon plush, I know, unless I venture into that mass-produced rip-off territory. All the same it's still technically breaking the law, and I feel weird about doing it, which is why I've tried to mostly limit myself to trading them, rather than selling them.

But all the same, it would be nice to have a steady stream of pokemon income, you know? So I thought I'd ask around and see what other pokemon plush makers do. Do you make a lot of pokemon? Is it a significant income source, or just a hobby/way to pay for your hobby? Do you trade much? Do you make original characters too? Which do you do more of? What do you think about copyright law and how pokemon plush relate to it? And of course the most important, significant, and vital question of all, do you like my plushes? :D

I wish I took more Pokemon commissions, but people simply don't want Pokemon plushies at the moment. I LOVE making them though, and have no problem doing it.

That's kind of weird. I wonder what the difference is, because they're the thing people request most often from me.

Granted, you're a very talented textiles artist, maybe they trust you with Poke'merch more?
SPark, the Purple Dragonbladespark on March 21st, 2011 02:11 am (UTC)
Well, relative talent would lead to overall more commissions, but it seems weird that it would lead to more pokemon as a percentage, if you see what I mean? Then again, a lot of my interest has come through the pkmcollectors community, and I seem to remember you being new there? That might be the difference. Once more collectors know a bout your work, it may get more popular?

Yeah, I actually just joined a couple weeks ago. Hopefully people will want more once I get my sales permission.
My main selling area is FurAffinity, and people want fursona plushies there, so it probably has to do with where you're trying to sell.

*nods* It also has to do with what you post, I think. I tend to get new people asking about pokemon right after I've posted a new pokemon plush to FA. So if you're not already making a lot of them, people may not be thinking about getting them from you. I do a TON of pokemon trades, and I've made a few for myself too, so I've posted a lot, especially recently.

Ah, I've always wanted to do a Pokemon trade. But I really should start making more, especially so that I have things to show in my LJ gallery! :O

Got a link to your FA? I'd like to check out what you've done. :)

I've been "watching" you for a while, I'm always insanely impressed with your lifesize pokemon and the other things you do!
SPark, the Purple Dragonbladespark on March 21st, 2011 02:28 am (UTC)
Ah hey, I know you! I watch you too, you make the most frigging adorable hats!
Emolgaliciouspunkspacewafers on March 21st, 2011 02:29 am (UTC)
Eeep! Thanks! :D
If you ever have spare time, would you be interested in a trade?
SPark, the Purple Dragonbladespark on March 21st, 2011 02:31 am (UTC)
I definitely would! I only have one trade project now, so I could squeeze another one in. What sort of thing would you like to get/make?
Emolgaliciouspunkspacewafers on March 21st, 2011 02:32 am (UTC)
Wow, I wasn't expecting it to be so soon xD
Well, I'd be interested in a lifesize Oshawott plush, or a Reuniclus, depending on what you're interested in making. I'd be willing to make anything really, is there something specific you have in mind?
SPark, the Purple Dragonbladespark on March 21st, 2011 02:35 am (UTC)
I'd probably rather do an Oshawott, I've no idea where I'd start with making a plush of something that's transparent!

Me, I'd love to get a Rapidash or Ponyta plush. Though not life size of course, that'd be huge. :D
Emolgaliciouspunkspacewafers on March 21st, 2011 02:37 am (UTC)
Oshawott would be perfect, then! Lifesize ones are around 20" or so, I could do yours around the same size?
Which would you prefer?
SPark, the Purple Dragonbladespark on March 21st, 2011 02:40 am (UTC)
I think I'd prefer Rapidash. :)

I'll put you down on the list, I think I already have fabric in the right colors. I mean, this won't be done any time soon, trade stuff goes slowly. But I'll be working on it quite shortly. :)
Emolgaliciouspunkspacewafers on March 21st, 2011 02:41 am (UTC)
Aye, same here. I have a few commissions that I have to finish but your plush should be done within a month or two. :D
I'm so excited, thanks for taking on this trade with me! <3
SPark, the Purple Dragonbladespark on March 21st, 2011 02:42 am (UTC)
You're welcome. :) It'll be fun.

Would you be willing to do a ninetales? I would be willing to pay, and from what I've read they're complicated to make so it wouldnt have to be lifesize. I'm just trying to see if I can get one made

Thank You for your time
SPark, the Purple Dragonbladespark on December 5th, 2013 11:56 pm (UTC)
I can totally do a ninetales, pretty much any size you like. Smaller ones are a little cheaper, bigger ones more expensive is all. (Though none of them are super cheap, doing all nine tails, at any size, is a lot of work!)
